Snap Inc. teamed up with iconic fashion brand Gucci and cult filmmaker Harmony Korine on a limited-edition run of Spectacles 3 camera sunglasses, as well as a short film shot entirely using the devices.
The company said the limited-edition Spectacles x Gucci by Harmony Korine mark the first collaboration between a luxury brand and its camera sunglasses, and they were created exclusively for Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 and inspired by Korine.
Snap added that the glasses were hand-painted in highly saturated tones inspired by the color palette used in Korine’s paintings, photography and film set in Miami, and the filmmaker’s Twitchy character appears on the back of the case.
Inspiration was also drawn from Korine’s photography collaboration with Gucci, specifically “Gucci by Harmony Korine” and “Yung Palm.”
Only 50 pairs were made, exclusively for content creators at Art Basel Miami Beach 2019, but the company said it is exploring ways to make the glasses available in the future.
In the meantime, Snapchatters globally can virtually try on Spectacles x Gucci by Harmony Korine here.
Korine—best known for Kids, Gummo, Spring Breakers and Beach Bum—shot experimental short film Duck Duck with the Spectacles 3, overlaying augmented reality onto three-dimensional scenes for immersive storytelling.
Snap said Korine used the camera sunglasses to transform Miami into “an unbridled dreamscape of sound and color,” and 3D effects that were developed for the film will be made available to Spectacles 3 users by Snapchat.
Three pairs of creator were invited to develop 3D effects using Snap’s Lens Studio, and they will be made available to all Spectacles 3 users starting Dec. 6.
Korine said in an email, “Spectacles 3 is a completely unique format that shifted my perspective on film, narrative, what’s animated and what’s real. By combining a first-person point of view and 3D effects, the sunglasses inhabit their own hyper-personal universe, and helped inspire the multisensory experience of Duck Duck—like you can walk into this world when you watch it.”
Spectacles director of hardware Steen Strand added, “Both Harmony Korine and Spectacles are helping push the boundaries of immersive storytelling. With the ability to capture depth like your own two eyes, Spectacles 3 brings Harmony Korine’s unique vision for Duck Duck to life, showing how this new technology can inform the future of creative storytelling.”
Both the Spectacles x Gucci by Harmony Korine and the Duck Duck film will be exhibited during Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 Dec. 5 through 8 at The Melin Building: 3930 Northeast 2nd Ave., Suite 200.
